Membership Guidelines
Joining the I3P
The Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (the I3P) is a national consortium of academic institutions, federally-funded labs and non-profit research organizations. Membership in the consortium is highly selective with only a small number of openings made available each year. Membership is open to not-for-profit research and academic institutions actively engaged in research related to cyber security and the information infrastructure. Only institutions may join; individuals are ineligible for membership, as are government agencies (Article III, Section 1 of the I3P Bylaws).
Benefits of Membership
- Members participate in an active multi-disciplinary research consortium, helping shape the nation's cyber security agenda.
- Members have opportunities to participate in I3P-funded, multi-institutional research projects.
- Members can participate in I3P educational initiatives, including the I3P Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
- Members take part in information sharing and collaboration with one another and with experts from industry and government.
Membership Responsibilities
- Members must appoint a Principal Representative with the authority to act on behalf of the member institution in all consortium matters.
- Members must appoint an Alternate Representative who may act on behalf of the member institution if the Principal Representative is unavailable.
- The Principal Representative and Alternate Representative should be established researchers possessing a sophisticated understanding of cyber security and information infrastructure protection, depth & breadth of relevant experience, proven judgment and community stature.
- One representative from each I3P member institution must attend at least two consortium meetings a year in order for the institution to remain an active, voting member.
- Member representatives are expected to participate in subcommittees and special assignments that move the consortium forward.
- Member representatives may be asked to represent the I3P externally in interactions with industry and government.
To Apply for Membership
Prospective applicants are evaluated according to the following criteria: the strength of their cyber security research and development efforts, overall standing among experts, contributions to professional journals and other publications, level of funding, organizational viability, and sustained commitment to the mission of the I3P.
An institution that fails to meet the above criteria, but has a unique strength, may—under exceptional circumstances—be considered for membership.
The full I3P Consortium votes on prospective applicants once a year based on the criteria set forth in Article III, Section 1 of the I3P Bylaws.
The call for 2010 applications will be announced shortly.
The Selection Process
In March each year, the I3P Executive Committee decides how many openings will be made available to new members in the coming year. A call for new members is then issued, and a deadline for submission of an I3P Institutional Application set. The full I3P Consortium votes on each applicant based on the criteria set forth in Article III, Section 1 of the
I3P Bylaws.
