Principal Investigator
Martin Wybourne is the vice provost for research at the Francis and Mildred Sears Professor of Physics at Dartmouth College. In addition, he serves as Chair & Principal Investigator of the I3P.
Wybourne's physics research focuses on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of nanoscale systems, ranging from semiconductor devices to nanoparticles organized on biological molecules. Wybourne has published more than 100 peer-viewed papers and holds nine patents. He has been a visiting professor at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie, L’École Normale Supèrieure, Paris, and has organized and chaired numerous international physics conferences. He is also Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
Wybourne has both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Nottingham. Before coming to Dartmouth, he was a professor at the University of Oregon and also directed the Phonon Physics Research Tea, at GEC Research Laboratories in London.
Executive Director
Martha Austin is the Executive Director of the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P) at Dartmouth College. In this role she is responsible for the strategic and administrative direction of the I3P. Prior to joining the I3P, Ms. Austin worked for 20 years in the public sector. She most recently served as the Executive Director of the Teton Valley Hospital Foundation in rural Idaho. She has also worked in a variety of positions in the office of United States Senator Judd Gregg, including Chief of Staff in Senator Gregg's Washington DC office from 1992-1995, and as a policy advisor and program director in New Hampshire from 1997-2005. Before joining the Staff of then Governor Judd Gregg in 1990, Ms. Austin served as Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont.
She has a master's in business administration from Yale University, and a bachelor's degree in English literature from Mt. Holyoke College.
Director of Research
Associate Director , ISTS/I3P Finance and Administration
Sarah Brooks started with ISTS and I3P in 2001. Before coming to Dartmouth, she worked for Harvard University in the Office of Sponsored Projects. Sarah holds a B.S. from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York and an MBA from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
Assistant Director for Communications and Outreach
A scientist by training, Laurie Burnham has devoted much of her career to scientific communication believing that even arcane science can be brought to life for a general audience. She came to the I3P from Twin Cities Public Television, where she was a program developer, helping conceptualize and develop documentaries for national broadcast. Laurie was also associate editor, special-issues editor, and coordinator of foreign-language editions for Scientific American magazine and editorial director of Shearwater Books, the trade book division of Island Press. In addition, she has consulted on energy and environmental issues for a number of corporations and non-profit organizations, including Procter & Gamble, Ciba Geigy, W.H. Freeman, and the Science Museum of Minnesota. She conducted her doctoral research under the tutelage of E.O. Wilson in the department of organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University, where she was a resident tutor in biology, a teaching fellow in arts and sciences and on the faculty of the extension school.
Associate Director of Research
Heather Drinan holds a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, as well as an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. She has worked on committee staff at the US Senate, as a data analyst at the Drug Enforcement Administration, and as a communications consultant for William M. Mercer in Chicago. Heather has been at the I3P since July 2004.
Events Manager
Nicole joined the I3P in 2000. Before coming to Dartmouth, she worked for SMITHS Medical Systems in Keene, New Hampshire in the Marketing Department as a Marketing Coordinator. Nicole holds a B.S. in Business Management from Keene State College and A.S. in General Business from Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont.
Finance Specialist
Jocelyn Troy started with ISTS and I3P in 2000. She takes care of the day to day financial expenditures, reconciles the grant and department accounts, and processes all travel vouchers.
Communications Assistant
Kiel Alarcón graduated from Castleton State College with a BS in Communications. He is involved with the design of the I3P website and publications as well as other forms of media outreach.
