Martin N. Wybourne
Principal Investigator
Martin Wybourne is the Vice Provost for Research and the Francis and Mildred Sears Professor of Physics at Dartmouth College. He joined the Dartmouth faculty in 1997 following ten years at the University of Oregon. Before moving to Oregon he directed the Phonon Physics Research Team in the Long Range Research Laboratory at GEC Research Laboratories, London. Trained as a condensed matter physicist he received his Ph.D. (1980) from the University of Nottingham, UK. His research has focused on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of nanoscale systems that range from semiconductor devices to nanoparticles organized on biological molecules. Martin has published over one hundred peer-reviewed articles and holds nine patents. He has been a visiting Professor at the University Pierre and Marie Curie, L'Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris, and has organized and chaired a number of premier international physics conferences. In 1998 he was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics. At Dartmouth he has served as the Associate Dean for the Sciences, and is currently the Principal Investigator of the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection.Charles C. Palmer
Research Director and Chair of the I3P
Charles C. Palmer is the Chair and Director of Research of the Institute for Information
Infrastructure Protection (I3P) at Dartmouth College. Palmer is also the CTO for Security and Privacy for IBM Research, and Associate Director of Computer Science at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center where he has worked since 1984. In these roles, he has broad responsibilities for the strategic initiatives and technical directions in the security and privacy areas across IBM Research.
Palmer is a member of the US Department of Homeland Security's Data Privacy and Integrity Advisory Board where he chairs the emerging technology and applications subcommittee. He is also a member of the editorial boards for the IEEE Computer Society's Security & Privacy Magazine and the upcoming International Journal of Information and Computer Security. He was also an adjunct professor of computer science at Polytechnic University from 1993 to 1997. He was named a Distinguished Engineer of the ACM in 2006, and is also a member of the IEEE and IEEE Computer Society.
Palmer has a doctorate in Computer Science fromPolytechnic University in Brooklyn, NY; a master's degree in Computer Science from Tulane University and a bachelor's in Computer Science from Oklahoma State University.
Martha Austin
Executive Director
Martha Austin is the Executive Director of the Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (I3P) at Dartmouth College. In this role she is responsible for the strategic and administrative direction of the I3P. Prior to joining the I3P, Ms. Austin worked for 20 years in the public sector. She most recently served as the Executive Director of the Teton Valley Hospital Foundation in rural Idaho. She has also worked in a variety of positions in the office of United States Senator Judd Gregg, including Chief of Staff in Senator Gregg's Washington DC office from 1992-1995, and as a policy advisor and program director in New Hampshire from 1997-2005. Before joining the Staff of then Governor Judd Gregg in 1990, Ms. Austin served as Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont.
She has a master's in business administration from Yale University, and a bachelor's degree in English literature from Mt. Holyoke College.
Eric Goetz
Associate Director for Research
Before coming to the I3P Eric Goetz was a research associate with the Institute for Security Technology Studies (ISTS). Eric has extensive experience in cyber security and infrastructure protection news, trend analysis and policy. Among other things, he has helped set up the Security in the News cyber security news summarization service and has authored a series of analysis reports on vulnerabilities and threats of critical infrastructure sectors. Eric holds an M.Sc. (with Distinction) from the London School of Economics and Political Science in the Theory and History of International Relations and a B.A. (with First Class Honors) in Politics and International Relations from the University of Kent at Canterbury.
Sarah Brooks
Associate Director , ISTS/I3P Finance and Administration
Sarah Brooks started with ISTS and I3P in 2001. Before coming to Dartmouth, she worked for Harvard University in the Office of Sponsored Projects. Sarah holds a B.S. from Ithaca College in Inthaca, New York and an MBA from Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
Laurie Burnham
Assistant Director for Communications and Outreach
A scientist by training, Laurie Burnham has devoted much of her career to scientific communication believing that even arcane science can be brought to life for a general audience. She came to the I3P from Twin Cities Public Television, where she was a program developer, helping conceptualize and develop documentaries for national broadcast. Laurie was also associate editor, special-issues editor, and coordinator of foreign-language editions for Scientific American magazine and editorial director of Shearwater Books, the trade book division of Island Press. In addition, she has consulted on energy and environmental issues for a number of corporations and non-profit organizations, including Procter & Gamble, Ciba Geigy, W.H. Freeman, and the Science Museum of Minnesota. She conducted her doctoral research under the tutelage of E.O. Wilson in the department of organismic and evolutionary biology at Harvard University, where she was a resident tutor in biology, a teaching fellow in arts and sciences and on the faculty of the extension school.
Heather Drinan
Information Manager
Heather Drinan holds a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, as well as an MBA from the University of Notre Dame. She has worked on committee staff at the US Senate, as a data analyst at the Drug Enforcement Administration, and as a communications consultant for William M. Mercer in Chicago. Heather has been at the I3P since July 2004.
Gail Walker
Administrative Assistant
(603) 646-0787Gail is a former resident of Rhode Island and California who recently relocated to New Hampshire to spend more time with her family. She worked for Common Cause of RI for 12 years as an Office Administrator responsible for fund raising, events and membership development. Prior to that, she was a volunteer art teacher, RISD museum associate, newsletter writer, CASA worker and lived in Southeast Asia for five years and traveled the world.
Autumn Agnoli
Data Specialist
Autumn Agnoli manages the I3P’s databases, including the Name Directory, mailing lists, collaborative workspaces, and access privileges. In addition, she updates the I3P website. Autumn holds a BA (World Literature) from Castleton State College. She has worked as an editorial assistant and data specialist for several sponsored-research projects at Dartmouth College.
Kiel Alarcón
Communications Assistant
Kiel Alarcón graduated from Castleton State College with a BS in Communications. He is involved with the design of I3P Publications as well as other forms of media outreach.
Elizabeth Bryan
Program Assistant
Elisabeth holds a BS in Social Work from the University of New Hampshire. She has worked for the past four years as a case manager for the elderly, using government funding to create and implement service plans for impoverished or terminally ill clients on a Medicaid Waiver. Prior to this, Elisabeth spent two years working with developmentally delayed and mentally ill adults, executing behavior plans, job coaching and helping clients integrate into society.
