2008 Call for New Members

 Institutional Application Form

About the I3P

The Institute for Information Infrastructure Protection (The I3P) is a national Consortium that includes academic institutions, federally-funded labs and non-profit organizations. With a nationwide membership, the I3P brings experts together to identify and help mitigate threats aimed at the U.S. information infrastructure.  In effect, the I3P functions as a virtual national lab with the ability to organize teams and workgroups to address research and policy-related-aspects of the vulnerabilities inherent in the information infrastructure. Currently, the I3P:

  • Fosters collaboration among academia, industry and government on pressing cyber security problems.
  • Develops, manages and supports national-scale research projects.
  • Provides research fellowship opportunities to qualified post-doctoral researchers, faculty and research scientists through the I3P Post-doctoral Fellowship Program.
  • Provides research opportunities to qualified post-baccalaureates, through the I3P Scholar program.
  • Hosts workshops, meetings and events on cyber security and information infrastructure protection issues.
  • Builds and supports a knowledge base as an online vehicle for sharing and distributing information to I3P members and others working on information security challenges.

Benefits of Membership

  • I3P Members are part of an active multi-disciplinary research consortium that serves as a national forum to discuss research and policy among peers, and to collaborate with other leading researchers and policy makers on issues related to information infrastructure.
  • I3P Members help to shape the national cyber security agenda.
  • I3P Members have opportunities to participate in I3P funded research projects and the I3P fellowship and scholar programs.
  • I3P Members take part in information sharing and collaboration with experts from industry and government.

Eligibility

Membership in the I3P Consortium is at the institutional level – individuals are not eligible.  Membership is open to not-for-profit research and academic institutions actively engaged in research and policy focused on cyber security and information infrastructure protection.  Consideration of the strength of an applicant institution’s cyber security research and development program will be based on the institution’s standing among experts, level of funding, sustained commitment to the mission of the I3P, contributions to professional journals and other publications related to cyber security and the I3P mission, impact or influence of its research, organizational viability, and other factors. Recognizing the multi-disciplinary nature of cyber security issues, under exceptional circumstances institutions with a particular specialty, even those that lack the usually desired breadth and depth, may be considered for membership. Government agencies are not eligible for membership (Article III, Section 1 of the I3P Bylaws).

Membership Responsibilities

  • I3P Members must appoint a Principal Representative with the authority to act on behalf of the member institution in all Consortium matters.
  • I3P Members must appoint an Alternate Representative who may act on behalf of the member institution if the Principal Representative is unavailable.
  • The Principal Representative and Alternate Representative should be established researchers possessing a sophisticated understanding of cyber security and information infrastructure protection, depth and breadth of relevant experience, proven judgment, and community stature.
  • A representative from the I3P Member institution must attend at least two of the quarterly Consortium meetings in a year in order for the institution to remain an active, voting member.
  • I3P Member representatives are expected to participate in subcommittees and special assignments that move the Consortium forward.
  • I3P Member representatives may be asked to represent the I3P externally in interactions with industry and government.

To Apply for Membership

Each application must contain:
  • An Institutional Application Form: Note: The application must be endorsed by a person who is authorized to act on behalf of the institution or organization.
  • The curriculum vitae or résumé for the proposed principal and alternate representatives.

The completed application packet may be e-mailed to i3p-consortium@dartmouth.edu.

The Selection Process

Each March the I3P Executive Committee will determine the number of openings the Consortium has available to offer to new members. Applicants will be invited to complete the I3P Institutional Application and submit it for review. The full I3P Consortium will vote on each applicant at the summer Consortium meeting. All applicants will be notified of their membership status shortly after the meeting. The Consortium will evaluate each application based on the criteria set forth in Article III, Section 1 of the I3P Bylaws.
